All this talk of Russell intrigues me. I definitely see Frege and Wittgentstein as more influential philosophers (according to philosphers). I've only really encountered Russell in an intro Philosophy Course (due to "The Problems of Philosophy") and in a course on Wittgenstein. Is he honestly one of the most 20 influential/important philosophers ever?

    @Blinking Spirt
Didn't you know that "Philosophy" means "Western Philosophy"?

Russell was a great popularizer of philosophy rather than a great philosopher in his own right. Like in science, for example, we have scientists and then we have popularizers of science i.e. the people who are trying to introduce the results of scientific research to the laymen (it is often the case that a great scientist is a poor popularizer and a great popularizer is a poor scientist). Similarly in philosophy we have philosophers and we have popularizers of philosophy. Russell was a popularizer of philosophy and he was great at it. He had a gift for writing and was great at expressing some very complex ideas in lucid prose.

This is one of the main reasons Russell had such a tortured relationship with Wittgenstein. Wittgenstein, who was a man of high integrity, always suspected Russell of being a phony. When Wittgenstein published his masterpiece (the Tractatus-Logico-Philosophicus), it was Russell who wrote the introduction to the English version of that book (because Russell's name carried a lot of weight in the English speaking world). But then, when Russell's introduction appeared in the German version of that work, here's what Wittgenstein had to say to Russell:

"When I got the German translation of the introduction, I couldn't bring myself to have it printed with my work after all. For the fineness of your English style was - of course - quite lost and what was left was superficiality and misunderstanding."

Sowing Salt is obviously a sideboard card for Tron and Tron alone. And I fail to see how a guaranteed one-for-one is "infinitely worse" than a card that is usually card disadvantage...

Because first of all, using up your sideboard slots for cards that deal with Tron lands and Tron lands alone is a poor strategy to begin with (Surgical Extraction is much more versatile / applicable to our meta). This coupled with the fact that Sowing Salt is a 2RR costing sorcery makes it significantly worse than Surgical Extraction. (Obviously the word "infinitely" was a hyperbole).

Of course, Sowing Salt does all that with just one card.

I can't imagine using this card in any competitive modern deck. It's infinitely worse than Surgical Extraction - and note that Surgical Extraction is itself not such a great card in modern.

Edit: I already got the explanation that satisfied me http://forums.mtgsalvation.com/showpost.php?p=8596831&postcount=1446

That explanation makes no sense. The person who wrote that explanation doesn't even seem to understand what you are suggesting.

It depends how you mean "private" though. Private like the Market Street forums or private like the Gutter? I would assume the former. The person who wrote that explanation is assuming the latter.

I'm hopeing beast or ben get their match tonight or tommrorrow. As the semifinal round is waiting on that.

It's been one week since I heard from my opponent. I replied to him immediately letting him know my available timings. I haven't heard from him since then (since one week ago).

I think you should enforce strict scheduling deadlines for your next tournament.

Whatever happened to the backseat moderation rules on MTGS? I remember that backseat moderation used to be banned on MTGS, but recently it was unbanned because people thought that most of the offending posts could be categorized simply as spam. But what if the offending post does not count as spam because it also contains some relevant on-topic discussion? Why should backseat moderation be allowed in such instances?

Is it justifiable to accuse other posters of trolling / spamming / engaging in some other rules violations? If you really feel this way, shouldn't you just report the post in question and wait for a mod to deal with it?

Without knowing what your new business is going to be about, it does seem like silly paranoia. Generally, just a name is not going to make or break your business. Just because you give your product or business a certain name does not mean that it going to be a big success.

Have you checked if someone already has the name trademarked? If it is such a big deal, odds are someone already thought of it and had it trademarked.

The Registrar of Trademarks in India has a search engine on their website according to which my chosen name is not yet trademarked. Additionally, whichever firm I hire to do this for me is also going to do their own search before filing for the trademark.

I completely agree with you that the name alone is not going to make or break my business. So you're right, in the grand scheme of things the name isn't a very big deal. But hey, small things get stolen all the time. And even if the thing that got stolen from you is not a very big deal, it still sucks.

Usually, I'm not the paranoid type of person. But in this instance, I can't help being overcome by an absurd sense of paranoia. How can I alleviate my paranoia?

I've been toying with a business idea for some time now and I want to trademark its name (the name is a huge part of my idea). There's no way I'm going to be able to survive a skirmish through the terrain of bureaucratic red tape in India so obviously I'm not going to do this myself - I'm going to go through a copyright / trademark services firm.

But here's the thing - what if those guys steal my idea? I don't know how I came to this absurd suspicion but I can't seem to rid myself of it. (I really this might seem like a really silly thing to worry about, but if you were in my shoes it would be a big deal to you!)

  • posted a message on Why do people wear jewelries?
    Quote from lone gentleman
I know, it's a simple question, but I can't find an answer. What's good in them? I don't think that jewelries can make a woman more beautiful that she is without them, and I never pay attention what jewelries wear people around me. I also heard that men wear silver/gold rings. I don't undestand why they do it. May be I'm too down-to-earth, but for me things which don't bring profit or make themselves useful are useless. Buying jewelries - spend money down the drain?
P.S. I read somewhere that diamonds, sapphires and other gemstones can affect human health - stabilise blood preasure, improve eyesight... What's good from gold?

I recently asked the same question as you and it turned in to a huge argument for me. I was really close to my grandfather who recently passed away. In his life he used to wear jewelry; he wore a necklace, a bracelet and a ring - all made of pure gold. So, everyone in my family wanted me to inherit and wear one of these pieces of jewelry after he had passed on. I kept trying to explain to them that I don't understand the point of wearing unnecessary baggage on my body, on my person - but they just thought I was being stubborn and unreasonable. Slant

    Quote from jim mick
You can untag yourself from the photos.
You can hide the photos from your Timeline (if you've moved on from Facebook Wall).

AFAIK, Facebook does not have any means yet or, from what I'm told, in the pipeline to limit the audience for other users' photos in which you're tagged to a specific subset of your friends.

Even if that were doable, there can be no way to prevent mutual friends from chancing upon photos in which you may or may not be embarrassing yourself or are evidence that you missed something for something else. Tongue

Hi, thanks for your response. It's actually not a tag, but I think that everything that you've said is still applicable. Rather than tagging me, my friend directly posted the photo on to my wall. I wish she had tagged me instead! Photos in which I'm tagged can only be seen by me (due to my privacy settings); but since she posted this on my wall, it's visible to everybody. In this case I have only two options:

    1. Hide the post from my wall: this means that nobody can see the post, not even my friend who posted it.
    2. Customize the privacy of my wall: this way I can limit exactly who views my wall posts, but this will affect my entire wall, not just a selected post.

Note that if this was a post created by me (rather than my friend) then I would have greater freedom in controlling it's visibility. For each individual post that I post on my wall, I am able to control exactly who is the audience for this post (custom). But this is not possible for posts made by others.

Cool yea I will def start this now, and will def use any help I can muster (probably going to make a new youtube account for it, my old one is like 7-8 years out of date)

@Lantern I am going to use the rest of IQ 2 to test it out and see what I can improve on then maybe start if up for IQ 3, I would really appreciate a copy of decklists so I don't go into commentary games blind (starting IQ 3 if you wouldn't mind)

Knowing your opponents decks in advance doesn't sound too fair considering that it's a tournament...

Also, I've watched a bunch of LSV videos where he puts modern decks through gauntlets (Daily Events) and he never knows his opponents decklists in advance.

EDIT: Ok, I've now waited for 15 minutes and my opponent has not showed up. I'm leaving for now.
