Is standstill just too busted to be reprinted? I love the card and would really enjoy playing it in Modern but I have a sneaking suspicion that it is just too good.
Quick question - what's everyone's opinion on keeping disrupting shoal in the burn match up? My current list is the stock list with 2 curiosity (I've also been testing Spider Umbra and it's surprisingly good but sometimes I still prefer Curiosity). What's the sideboard plan for it? My combo heavy meta has been replaced recently with burn a lot of burn that it's almost come to the point where I'm considering Dispel in the sideboard and possibly mainboard. Sideboard is also the stock list with 3x Blood Moon, 4x Huntmaster, 2x Feed the Clan, 2x Ancient Grudge, 2x Pyroclasm, 1x Dismember, 1x Revelry.
Any advice in this match up or should I just temporarily find a new deck? My current plan is -4x Git probe, -2 Curiosity, +4 Huntmaster, +2 Feed the Clan and I try to take a midrangey/controllish role and mulligan one landers usually.
I've played over 8 matches (majority of them being 3 games) vs. burn and my current record is 7-1. It is a close matchup but you tend to edge them out basically every game. Cheap counters and big green guys are tough for them to beat.
This is my SBing plan.
-4 Gitaxian Probe, -2 Delver of Secrets, +2 Feed the Clan, +2 Flashfreeze, +2 Spell Pierce
After thinking about it more, I think a Green splash will be better for the deck. Noble Hierarch plays well with our plan of taxing by getting out our taxers/anti shufflers while letting us keep GQ and Tec Edge up (giving us an early mana advantage just like Vial). We can try to beat the ground plan by adding a bit more removal and rely on ooze or exalted to get our guys through.
I've ran the standard version with splicer, wisp and resto in the past. I just thought with the new Glowrider we could try a more taxing build.
Honestly, hitting someone for 3-5 dmg a turn is enough to win the game when they can't play any spells/or have a blocker.
My issue with creatures that are only there to be beat sticks (Brimaz/Splicer/etc.) is that I think 3 mana beaters are just too slow/clunky and that they don't match up well vs. Goyf/Tasigur. However, I am ok with 2 mana beaters with evasion (avenger) or a 2 mana beater that provides value/will get you through given enough time (Anafenza). I am just trying a version that is more focused on the taxes side rather than blinking for value.
Creatures may be weak but they all have great taxing abilities. The idea is to ignore their creatures with fliers but I can also use tappers to get through/racing situations. Avenger and Anafenza provide the beats but I don't think true beaters are necessary. As long as each creature provides some kind of positive effect for us.
What use is their goyf/tasigur if we just tap it every turn and if they spend their 3cmc bolt to kill our tapper then we are happy with our other threats/fliers/etc.
@Chaam: Usually opposing creatures aren't that big of a problem so 6x tap creature effects seems excessive over other possible taxes. Also although Phyrexian Revokeris a staple in Legacy it falls short in modern due to all the cheap removal being thrown around in the meta, maybe in the sideboard but main most the times is going to be a dead card. Lastly flickerwisp is one of the heart and soul cards in the deck; I know it may seem less appealing since you don't run Blade Splicer (which is another great card) but it also works on Mana denial with vial at the end of your own turn, as well as against twin, and many other decks in the format. Also many people have cut back on aven mindcensor since the effect does not stack, and early fetches are gone by the time it hits the table, still worth a couple maybe even three in certain metas but 4 I think you will find to be too many. I am interested to see how 4-4 split thalia and wingmare hold up like i showed in the post above i am gravitating to a 3-3 split myself. Try the deck out though and send us some results of how it is works in tournament settings.
I played the deck on and off since Modern became a thing. Over that period, opposing creatures weren't that big of a deal IF you had 2+ blade splicer tokens out. However, since I want to try out 4 glowrider 2.0 and take the deck towards more of a taxing route than flicker abuse, I think you have to fight their creatures in some other way (in this case with tappers, which also do double duty as denial vs. mana dork decks). These will also help you chip damage through with your arbiters, thalias, revokers and etc. Also I realize revoker isn't the greatest, I've tested him in the past. He is amazing vs. Tron and Affinity but pretty lackluster vs decks where he has nearly 0 targets for.
Again, I am just testing a full on taxing strategy so numbers could change between the 2/1 fliers, revokers, etc.
I don't think there is anyway they reprint mom. Standard can't handle it. It is way more oppressive in Standard than anything they have printed in the set so far. Especially with all these strong white weenies running around, the deck would be unbeatable. But, I would love it in Modern. I think it would be incredibly strong but not OP in that the format would warp completely around it.
Although, I really just want Wasteland or at least a better Tectonic Edge (1 mana activation without the 4 land clause) so I can play Weathered Wayfarer and Knight of the Reliquary in some Maverick style deck.
Better Tectonic Edge
Land
1,t: Destroy target nonbasic land.
...Although this would probably destroy Legacy since they now have both this adn Wasteland.
