Hey guys I have been thinking about a RUG list. Its probably my favorite color combination not sure why but I never really get the opportunity to play it in any format. I have been thinking something like this. What do you you guys think?
Chandra turn 4 can be a little slow against Affinity, but remember that her +1 kills most of their dudes. I'd side her out only after all your thoughtseize, bob, lilianas if you have that much to bring in against them. And even Thoughtseize is fine to leave in against Affinity.
I dont mind Thoughseize against them, but there is no reason to keep them in over Inquistions. Yeah Chandra is obviously very strong against all their dudes, but it is pretty slow. Its really not something I would want to see in my opener. Again I am fairly new to Jund I played it a little with Deathrite, and play it in Legacy so I know the game plans, with that being said I didnt want to risk keeping in a card that If I flipped with Bob would dome me for 4, and be too slow. Especially when all the cards I am bringing in are just insane against them.
@takeyourshoesoff: grats! were you at the Hotsauce ptq? If so, any idea on who/what decks were top 8?
Nah, I moved out to Portland OR. a back in August, but if it was in the Indiana area I had a couple friends go to it, they both made top 8 with fae actually. I believe Ray Perez Jr. won that PTQ.
@ TakeYourShoesOff first GZ for your really good 14th, i have any doubts, u play 3 Charms but dont side in Golgari vs affinity? Idk if u are good positionated to beat aff without it, if u ahould remove one card in ur side what would be? I have some problems to beat aff and idk if i should play 2 Jund or 1/1 Split Jund and Rakdos
I do like Golgari Charm against them, I am just not sure if I bring it in 100% of the time. Now that I type this I remember very clearly blowing up two man lands with a G. Charm. I probably did this SB plan. 1 Jund Charm, 1 Rakdos Charm, 1 Golgari Charm, 2 Ancient Grudge, 2 EE, 2 Fulminator Mage. Taking out, 3 Liliana, 3 Thoughtseize, 1 Chandra, 1 bob, 1 Iok. I think jund Charm is pretty nuts, honestly though I really really like all the charms. Those we easily the cards I brought in the most.
@ TakeYourShoesOff Would you mind posting your decklist, and maybe giving an overview of how the tournament went? Matchups, sideboard choices, specific thoughts on how everything did?
The Tron matchup *is* just miserable. It is just how the two decks function, you're trying to be midrange/control strategy, with very few ways to aggro out and get underneath their slow uptake, and you have no way to punish them for their lack of interaction (like a combo deck would, obviously) and so they just get to completely go way over everything the Jund deck is trying to do. 5/6 goyfs and Liliana's look like a joke in comparison to Wurmcoil Engines and Karn. You obviously shouldn't just auto-scoop in any matchup, make them play it out, but even with bringing in extra thoughtseizes, and 4 fulminators it is really rough. All decks have bad matchups, Tron is just one of ours. If you really think you will be seeing Tron more often, you can jam some Sowing Salts in your sideboard, and if they can't ghost quarter their own land, you pretty much win on the spot. But I don't think Tron is a big enough portion of the metagame to justify weakening your other matchups by delegating that many sideboard slots to it.
Yeah of course! This is the 75 I took to a respectable finish
As for the matchups it went like this. This all from memory so bare with me.
Round One: VS UB Tezzeret.
Game one: I basically get crushed by a turn 3 Chalice on two, into turn 4 Liliana, Turn 5 Tezz, turn 6 Wurmcoil. Not feeling too good after that. I brought in 2 Ancient Grudge, 2 Fullminator Mage, 1 Rakdos Charm, 1 Thoughtseize, 2 Thrun. I dont really remember what I took out except for the two Angers.
Game two: This one went pretty smoothly, Double discard spells on turn 1 and two, cast a goyf. Start attacking, the only thing he really does is play an ensnaring bridge with one card in hand. (Wurmcoil) I abrupt decay the bridge and get there off Goyf.
Game Three: This was a very long game. I ended up having Goyf and double Bob out at 17 life with him have 2 ensnaring bridges and a wurmcoil out. I eventually find enough removal spells off bobs getting down to 5 life solely off bob triggers to kill both bridges, and the wurmcoil and token to get lethal on him.
Round 2: VS Goblins:
There is not really much to say here. Courser and Ooze is really good against him, and so was betterskull post bored. Not really anything too challenging.
Round Three: VS Merfolk
Game one: I basically kill everything he plays without issue and kill him with a goyf + raging Ravine. (though he did cast master of the waves against me which could have been very bad for me)
Game two: Basically same song and dance. I brought in 2 EE, 1 Jund Charm. He tried to play a Kira the Great Glass Spinner which quickly died to an abrupt decay. At one point I had double goyf, and three cards in hand. 2 Anger, 1 Terminate. Needless to say he didnt win that game either.
Round Four: VS Jund
This round I lost. I took down game one off being able to answer his threats and keep mine around. He couldnt find a removal spell for my Bob, or Courser and by the time he did it was too late. I just buried him in card advantage.
I lost games two and three, and I think it was do to sheer inexperience with the deck. This was the first time I played the mirror and was unsure what cards where the most valuable. I ended up siding in the exact same cards as he did but I took out all the wrong cards I think. I brought in 3 Fulminator Mage, 2 Thrun, 1 Batterskull. I took out 2 Anger, 1 Bolt, 1 Thoughtseize and 1 IoK. But I should have taken out all my discard spells i think.Still not 100% sure though. So now Im 3-1 at this point
Round Five: VS UR Twin:
This is the exact reason I played this deck. He literally could not do anything except watch me beat him down with an ooze, and Courser. It was glorious. I brought in 1 Thoughtseize, 1 Liliana, 1 Golgari Charm, 1 Rakdos Charm and took out 2 Anger, 1 Pulse, and I think Chandra? cant remember. This was by far the easiest match I played.
Round Six: VS RG Tron
Game one I mull to five. Thoughtseize on turn one and see I am playing tron so I know I have to try to win as fast as possible. Turn two I playout my goyf as a 4/5 and start the beats. I get him down to six life while I have a 4/5 goyf, and 3/3 ooze and all I have to do is dodge a Karn. He draw the Karn. I die soon after.
Game Two I bring in 1 Thoughtseize, 1 Rakdos Charm, 3 Fulminator mages. Cant remember what I took out. All angers, and shaved other removal spells i think. But I keep and opener of 3 Lands, Ooze, Fulminator Mage, Courser. Would have loved to see a discard spell but never did. I blind blowup a tron piece and he just plays it the next turn. Ends up Sundering Titaning me for a one sided Armageddon. Rough.
Round 7 and 8: VS Affinity.
Take down both matching in two Games. I think this matchup is fairly in our favor. I brought in the usual suspects. 2 Grudge, 1 Rakdos Charm, 1 Jund Charm, 2 EE, 2 Ful Mages. Took out, 3 Thoughtseize, 3 Liliana, 1 Chandra, either 1 IoK or 1 Bob cant remember haha.
Overall ended 6-2, and in 14th out of 215 like I said before so I was still pretty happy with everything. Sorry that I cant remember all the details. I hope this was good enough! Feel free to ask me anything else Ill do my best to answer, or at the very least give my opinion for whatever that is worth haha.
Hey guys ended up going 6-2 at my PTQ coming in 14th out of 215 :). I was pretty happy with the deck over all. Only losing to RG Tron and the mirror. The tron match up seems pretty miserable so I would like find away to sure that up.
Hey guys, I just played a few games against Living End today and I have to say it feels nearly impossible to win... I understand we have three oozes, but they dont do much if they are getting Shrieked Maw'd away or Beast Within'd. Plus we might never see it. Do we basically concede this matchup and hope to dodge it? All I have for in the bored is a Jund Charm, and a Rakdos Charm, but again if I dont see them I lose pretty handily. What do you guys think?
Hey guys I went 4-0 last night at my LGS Modern night with this list. I am still a little uncertian on how to SB so if any of you guys could help me make a SB plan that would be awesome! I played against Mel Pod, Affinity, Blue Moon, and UR Delver. Here is my current list.
Yeah I think EE is almost a needed card in the SB. I would be really surprised to see a list with zero in the 75. Here is the SB I will be using for a little while to see how I like it. So far its been pretty solid. I am still making small adjustments in the 15 and 60. Speaking of which, how many lands do you guys like to play? I am currently playing 25 with 6 four drops. I have a friend playing 23. What do you guys like? Here is the SB:
This thread has no direction whatsoever. Chaos rules. For those who would like to actually create a good deck:
I'm going to make my own Faeries thread. With blackjack and hookers.
What would direction look like? Where I think we are is agreed on the control deck list with as few lands as possible. With SoFaF. Leaving about two cards undecided.
No, we haven't. People like me are just not yet sold on using Swords. The main problem, however, is that other people are bringing up thousands of ideas and cardchoices at a time, making them basically worthless. The foucs should be on commonly testing one single card a week or so and then discussing our results with it, not testing like 10 cards at once.
You will never ever get everyone to agree on a 75 let alone a 60. There is no point in trying. I dont see why you are complaining right now since we were actually having a relevant discussion on how to make our pod matchup better, and how to streamline SBs and what cards have been used to success from others. It seems like you are getting nothing out of this thread because its either your way or its wrong. For example I play a single sword of feast and famine to great success, I haven never done worse than X-1 with my list and I went X-1 only once. Every other week I go X-0. So go ahead and make your own thread where you will be talking to yourself. I like brainstorming, and I think it will get us a lot farther and faster than ALL of us testing the same list and tweaking one card at a time. Thats just so inefficient. But then again I play a sword, so Im probably wrong.
I am pretty sold on my maindeck. It has been extremely solid for me. I win a high % of game ones. Like I have said before I have been doing very well with this list going either X-0 or X-1 never worse than that. But I think the SB could use some work. I am considering -1 Thoughsieze, -1 Mindbreak Trap, -2 Surgical Extraction for +2 Grafdiggers Cage, +2 Hibernation.
What do you guys think? I could see cutting Relics as well, or cut them and keep the Surgicals.
Let's say the meta looks like this
GOOD MU for us
13% Twin
6% Storm
5% Hatebear
4% Scapeshift
3% UW
BAD MU for us
11% Pod
9% Affinity
7% Tron
5% Jund
4% UR Aggro
You maindeck 6x spot removal and 8x hand disruption. So probably anything you can't already deal with won't be dealt with by adding more spot removal or hand disruption unless that is doing something you're not already doing. Therefore Thoughtseize is definitely out. Slaughter Pact should be out. Darkblast might hold a place, barely.
I think your grave hate must foremost be capable of answering Pod. Which neither Surgical Extraction nor Relic of Progenitus do particularly well. However, Relic is quite good against Storm. So I think I agree with your intuition that instead of four slots grave hate you might do better with two Grafdigger's Cage and one Relic. Or just the two Cages.
How does Mindbreak Trap interact with Snapcaster Mage? Does it get a flashback cost of 4cmc even if they cast three or more spells? I think not, and if so I would share your intuition toward cutting it. If it had synergy I would probably keep it. Even though one usually doesn't want redundancy between maindeck and sideboard, I think a single additional Spell Pierce is quite strong against decks that are relying on getting through a key non-creature cast. And Spell Pierce does have decent synergy with Snapcaster. So replace the Trap with one of those?
I think sweepers are tricky in Faeries, because Explosives for UB hits both 'blossom and SSS. While Damnation sweeps our tokens (which is really just a life point cost). But I think Explosives is indispensable because we have so few ways to remove non-creature permanents. The question is whether you also need Hibernation? I think Hibernation will be targeting Jund (it's no good against Pod). But I think Jund is addressed about as well as it can be with your spot removal, and swapping Explosives and Damnation into the maindeck for the three Thoughtseizes. So Hibernation doesn't seem merited. You might want it against Hexproof or somesuch, but that is a very small part of the meta. Affinity is such a big part of the meta so would Hurkyl's be a better call? I have mixed feelings about that, because they are just going to put everything straight back down again. Bile Blight or Echoing Decay might be better.
Negate seems questionable to me. I know many play them. But I feel that Spell Pierce is usually better. It trumps counter-chains well, and is timely against an early Pod or unacceptable Aura. Hence I might suggest removing both the Negates and the Trap (discussed above) and bring in a Spell Pierce and perhaps a Spell Snare. Countersquall is also an option, but I think you need the option to cast early and the colour-cost can interfere with that.
Other cards to consider are Spreading Seas against Tron and Scapeshift. Sower of Temptation is stronger than it seems. Pithing Needle is decent but possibly a bit redundant: it's main targets are Colonnade and Pod of course, although it can target Karn, Exarch and Kiki (it can't stop Exarch's triggered ability, but it can stop the activated ability that Twin would bestow). Spellskite of course: Faeries strong point is that we're all over Twin, but Spellskite is also a decent bolt magnet - and there are soooooo many bolts these days. I like Sudden Death which provides extra spot removal and blocks Twin if cast in response to the enchantment, netting 2 for 1. It can be cast in response to a Pod activation finding the last part of the Melira combo, etc. A minor problem with Sudden Death is having the coloured mana to cast it at the moment you need it. Trickbind has come up: it answers all kinds of things in the format and is an easy cast. I'm not sure yet if it is good. Obviously it can respond to Pod to stifle the activation after they pay the sacrifice. Shadow of Doubt and Lifebane Zombie are also interesting options.
I'm interested in the Damnation BTW. What do you primarily use it against? Do you bring it in against Affinity? Is it quick enough?
I'm not sure if I agree with your good and bad matchup chart. I have not losses to tron, jund, or any other bgx decks. Affinity should not be too bad because bitterblossom s actually quite good against them. I really do appreciate your sb analysis though. I will also say hibernation is much better against pod than it is against jund as it bounces pod itself and basically every single creature they play. It's also decent against zoo. I do bring in damnation against affinity because they typically play all their dudes out at once and it's pretty much a blow out. If you can follow that up with a batterskull the game is over. I like the idea of life bane zombie. I'll have to seriously test him.
There is always Trickbind/Squelch if you think that Shadow of Doubt is too narrow.
Trickbind is gtlorious. It stops Planeswalkers, Pestermite and Deceiver Exarch and Pod. I'd say it is at least a must for sideboards.
I tried 2x Trickbind maindeck for awhile. It's not a maindeck card, but could be good in sideboard. It has some decent uses. Because it is split second it cannot be countered, or fizzled using Mizzium Skin. And it prevents reactivation of the ability for the rest of the turn, which can be relevant. Another satisfying use of it is to stifle Snapcaster Mages. Or sometimes stifling a fetchland will swing a game.
EDIT I should add that I eventually replaced Trickbind in my sideboard with 2x Sudden Death (which could equally be 2x Spellskite). The reason I chose to do so is because Trickbind typically gives up card advantage (not in all cases). And the critical situation I chose it to answer was Twin-Exarch or Twin-Pestermite in which cases it still leaves the threat on the board. So unless you top deck an answer or have one in hand, Trickbind isn't particularly useful. Plus if opponent could have countered your permanent answer, they might still do so when you use it. I preferred Sudden Death because it is just as uncounterable, gains advantage against Twin (they lose two cards, you lose one), and hits a few other targets you might want gone. Sudden Death can respond to the first trigger of Kiki, preventing him triggering again because he is dead before he can untap. Trickbind can stop him triggering, too, but only for the rest of this turn: you still have to kill him.
While this is true, where Trickbind really shines is against Pod and Storm. While Storm is already a good matchup, being able to counter the storm trigger is great. And against Pod it is essentially "Target player sacrifices a creature, loses 2 life, and taps an untapped land he or she controls". That is pretty good.
Your Pod example sounds satisfying and useful. I didn't have any match-ups during the period I played Trickbind to test that. I had expected Trickbind to be very strong against Storm, but somehow for me it worked out to be decent but not really better than other cards that had wider uses. In part because they often were storming with more than one Grapeshot. I found control-Faeries to be adequately good against Storm through countering their key casts - early in their chain - and using Engineered Explosives to remove the Ascension. I think Trickbind is about equal to graveyard hate against Storm. But easier for them to recover from.
That all said, I do believe it would help the development of the Faeries deck if a few pilots would try the card to give us wider experience to judge from.
I am pretty sold on my maindeck. It has been extremely solid for me. I win a high % of game ones. Like I have said before I have been doing very well with this list going either X-0 or X-1 never worse than that. But I think the SB could use some work.
