they've been progressively printing more and more twin hate until they hit the critical card in rending volley. the card is applicable in various match ups and slides right by all the defenses that blue can put up (aside from mizzium skin.) before, they tried to print narrow hate cards, and they didn't work. they kept making hate broader and broader until it was good enough to devote sideboard space for.

its like printing perish if the meta was mono green.

i think a 3 mana edict is a bit too costly. i'd rather give them some incidental life gain than play a 3 mana situational card. grafted wargear is a neat idea. it does synergize well with the tokens. i think 6 discard is a little too much. 4 or 5 seems to be a good number that has worked for me. i would also not run doom blade. it has the highest percentage chance miss on targets. things like tasigur, angler, olivia, vault skirge. i'd prefer gftt, even though it misses an entire deck because it hits everything else. i've always approached removal in this deck as "what removal should i use to take care of threats in the first 3 or 4 turns?" since that's when this deck is at its weakest. after we get going, things shouldn't be able to resolve.

i'm also not the biggest fan of river of tears. i do run them, but i think i only use 2. most of the time, having an island in its place won't change anything.

i haven't seen anyone use thrun in this format for probably a year. so much so that i stopped preparing for it in my WUR sideboard, and thrun is the bane of that deck.

hey guys, does anyone have experience against the geist resto decks? Im having trouble mainly with UWR but UW can be a pain sometimes (against the uwr geist player i'm apparently incredibly unlucky). thinking of taking my lilianas out of the board for Infinite Obliteration though, since liliana was my control/midrange and tron slot, and infinite obliteration seems to do work against both matchups, but I wanted to get more perspective on faeries vs geist/resto

WUR is pretty much my main deck (fae is obviously my pet deck), and fae stomps on most URx decks. i'm not 100% sure about grixis, since that wasn't really a deck when i played multiple times a week. our threat comes down a turn earlier than WUR's, and we never have to tap out again. i'm not sure if you're going for the removal heavy build over discard (i personally dislike that build), but that's probably the reason why. i don't remember ever losing to a URx deck when playing fae, though that's probably a combination between pilot skill and the fact i goldfished this deck for a year and a half before it was legal to play it. spell snare also works really well. it hits all their cheap counters, helix, and snapcaster. beyond that, spellstutter gets all their 1 mana removal, and all our commonly played removal hits all their creatures, or at least makes for a favorable trade (dismember, gftt, smother [doesn't hit angel], disfigure.) post board, you can bring in sac effects for geist, a heavier control package, or an attrition package. i used to bring in two phyrexian crusaders and watch them panic. if they go for the ol' resto on your end step, into swing to bait removal, into geist, just play a combat phase mistbind to blank damage and lock them out of their second main.

i don't run liliana because all our cards are value, and we don't have a way to take advantage of discarded cards, aside from maybe a 1 or 2 of snapcaster. if we're using her as an edict, you might as well run devour flesh or geth's verdict. as for infinite obliteration, i'd rather play memoricide if i'm going for that effect, but i don't really like that effect in general.

i'd like to think that WUR midrange is like the esper stoneblade of the format. it is 50/50 or 45/55 with most things and gets a lot better after board. it just happened to fall out of favor over the last half a year.

you're not supposed to activate tar pit on turn 4 unless you're incredibly ahead or something went terribly wrong.

so here's the analysis on states.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_lXwFLJfFhY

props to her for compiling all of this data from SCG. http://www.starcitygames.com/content/2015modernautumnresults

    notable things
The most common decks to make top 8 were Burn, Jund, and Affinity.
The biggest winners were Jund and Affinity as well, while only one of the 19 Burn decks that made top 8 managed to go the distance.
Compared to the current share of the metagame on mtgtop8, Zoo was the deck that overperformed the most, while Affinity was the biggest underperformer.
The three most common cards from Battle for Zendikar were Crumble to Dust, Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger, and Radiant Flames. Gideon and Ob Nixis were the only other ones to appear more than once.
Out of the 208 decks looked at, there were only 33 total cards from BFZ.

here's the thread for it. https://www.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/comments/3pmbpx/scg_modern_states_stats_and_analysis/

i like the list. its not too far off from what i would play. minor differences are the removal package, ashiok, and serum visions. otherwise counter choice and number are pretty meta dependent (i'm on 3/2 mistbind/cryptic and snares instead of remands.) i'm actually most curious about serum visions. i fully understand why you'd play them. did they do a lot of work in smoothing things out? would you rather have had an instant speed draw/filter like telling time/anticipate?

For what it's worth, the Competitive events and my own FNMs that I attended in California have usually been won by someone who has a lot of play skill in Magic and especially Modern. I can't say the same for Standard or even Limited, although this is just really my opinion.

of course. its location dependent. like there are stores that are known as the "casual" store where people to go have fun, test builds, and the atmosphere is relaxed and no one is too serious. you know, the "hahahah, you killed me with your sword of vengeance on your one of squadron hawk! good on you sir!" type store. then there are stores that are cut throat and people go there to win. the atmosphere is generally still welcoming, since competition breeds camaraderie, but when it comes down to it, you're looking to crush your opponent when the clock starts. back where i used to play modern, every fnm would feel like a ptq. i wouldn't trade that for anything, since it definitely made me a better player.

i also can't speak for standard or limited.

The point of Magic is to be able to get the cards and play the decks we create against each other. The only thing high prices do is discourage people from bothering to even try to play the game.

this is false. decks can be built using cheap cards. you want powerful and efficient cards for competitive decks. this is what irks me about people who complain about price. they're often like, "i need to spend 1k on cards so i can play jund at fnm!" what's the point. a toyota yaris is perfectly serviceable to get you from point a to b. you don't need a ferrari.

also, regarding blood moon. if a card exists in the format that forces you to be more conscious about your plays, then i am all for it. strive to be a better player, not someone who wants to handicap the format because they want to fetch all non basics.

i actually think siding into twin is pretty funny and great. cards that are good against delver aren't exactly good against twin, particularly if you show off young pyromancer game one. there's an off chance they'll board in illness in the ranks or something, but they'll mostly be focused on delver, tasigur, or angler, and try to progress their board more in the early turns, leaving them open to a turn 3 exarch and turn 4 twin. plus it only takes up 10 slots in the board.

I dont know if you have ever played infect, but you need a very specific opening hand and draws to go off turn 3, even more so turn 2.

not really. you need a 1 drop, of which you run 4 of, then you need 2 of might of old krosa/groundswell, both of which are also 4 ofs, another land (which needs to produce green), and a mutagenic growth, which is also a 4 of. not really specific, seeing as there's a fair amount of redundancy. turn 3 its even easier, assuming no interaction on the opponent's part. but for there to be no interaction in the first 2 turns, the opponent or deck has to be pretty terrible.

there was that one time someone tweeted that the delivery address of someone who bought out a modern flavor of the month card was the SCG address. then the SCG guy responded via twitter that he wouldn't do business with that store any more.

wow, check out the amount of detail in the above statement. haha. but it has happened at least once. its pretty common knowledge that they were behind the original spike in zen fetches fall/winter 2012.

anyways, what BTZ foils are modern playable? i currently am going for anticipate and crumble to dust.

that's a good report gahouf. my list is astonishingly similar to yours, except i'm not running serum visions and am instead going for anticipate or telling time and a boros charm (just trying it for fun). can't really decide which is better, as they're both basically the same thing. even my board is similar. i've been thinking about mindcensor vs shadow of doubt and knight errant vs big elspeth. they both have their merits, but the match up where i think it'd help the most, any bgx deck, big elspeth seems better. i'm not sure though, i still have to test some more.
