Is something from Affinity getting banned? Two Affinity decks made the top 8. Just checking because no one noticed.

if they haven't hit it by now, i doubt they will. nothing has changed in the deck since the format's inception.

I don't understand how this relates at all to my post. I mean, sure, you say you didn't read it, but then that brings up the question of why you felt the need to reply to a post you didn't actually read and make yourself look really silly, especially considering it wasn't even a particularly long post.

shhh. don't worry about it Wink i was actually responding to the part about tapping down lands on upkeep. i missed the context entirely because i didn't read your post.

And isn't possible with Earthcraft, either!

i haven't read any of your post Sweat , but i've done that on multiple occasions with fae. remember that deck that wizards thought players would have PTSD of? despite the fact that if the game really has been growing at the rate they claim, > 75% of the current players haven't experienced the masterwork that was caw blade and even fewer have played against standard fae. let us not forget that the real strength of caw blade came from jace's ability to generate absurd card advantage with fetches, squawks, ponder/preordain, equipment, and stoneforge. but of course, people who haven't played the deck don't quite know these things, but still talk about it.

You are discounting how much the format would change because of the unban. You are thinking the format would continue on course. Just because certain decks would ignore SFM, doesnt mean the match up percentages would stay the same. Its possible those decks that would ignore SFM would drop a tier. Also Grixis would take a hit. Probably shift to UWR. But like I said, time will tell. I dont think Wotc wants to shake the format up that much.

i can swear i've heard someone say this before with valakut, bitterblossom and wild nacatl. i wonder if people ever get tired of being wrong.

the format is equipped to handle a 1/2 for 2cmc. the format can also handle a +1 card advantage for the deck that runs said 1/2. the entire identity of modern is decks that go above or under fair decks. i.e. decks that stoneforge would go into. if you look at (the current) tier 1 decks, the only one that is a purely fair deck is jund, and that's because the deck is made of answers (there's an argument that can be made for affinity, but lets avoid that discussion because it can go either way). the others are all made to ignore what the opponent is doing or stifle them long enough to enact their own game plan.

that list seems about right. the only things that really stand out are the one of removal spells (yay for 2 go for the throat, but that probably came back to bite him when he was paired against affinity) and having so much emphasis on the fetch/shock mana base. having tasigur and murderous cut in the deck does put some strain on the yard, particularly with three snapcasters, but hey, he's the one who top 16ed the event, not me. so who am i to judge. also, 4 creeping tar pits seems like a lot.

yay, showing that discard is needed for the deck to do well. being purely reactionary isn't the way to go with this deck.

i would have no problem if the other hate cards were in the format with choke. as it stands, i find it unfair that blue has strict hate in boil and choke whereas other colors don't really have such powerful foils.

i'd be sad if they banned something from storm again. that deck is just a torso now. you might as well ban the storm cards so the rituals stay around for other decks (and unban seething song.)

modern is so combo heavy because they refuse to print the requisite counterspells that stop people from doing anything and everything they want. even daze would go a long way to stop people from blindly playing out their cards.

yeah. i agree with storyteller. taking the deck into an unknown meta is a scary thought. however, if you get a grasp on what you're going to be playing, you can easily build the deck to beat what you're going to face.

the other problem with the deck is that games with a bitterblossom and games without one play completely differently. its not like GBx where you're like, "i didn't get my goyf, but i got my siege rhino or olivia. so all is good." the deck is completely different without it. anyone can pilot fae when you land a turn 2 bb. its the games you don't get it that puts people off the deck because they're that much more difficult to navigate.

the changes are terrible. if the main event itself isn't modern, you don't get a cash payout. instead you get stuff from a prize wall for a terrible cash value/ticket exchange rate. there is no incentive for a player who is invested in a non-rotating format to play in the sunday events. yay boosters and playmats? seriously?

You don't want a Stoneforge Mistake unban. The problem is that the card just shuts down aggro strategies effortlessly. A turn 3 4/4 lifelink vigilance that is recurrable if destroyed is too strong.

that's not what batterskull does. and you do realize that boggles does have a creature with those same stats at the same time a fairly often.

conclusion from this top 32: blue (and arguably white) needs more oomph.

lily will be fine for standard when we go back to innistrad. delve will have rotated and there isn't much in bfz that utilizes the graveyard.

i find this "cards need to be cheaper" thing kind of funny. on the grand scale, they've done a good job at keeping prices relatively affordable. i maintain that people do not need a tier 1 deck to go play at an FNM, particularly in modern, when off the radar decks can win a good amount of the time.

there was a longer blurb here about how people who want cheaper cards are like people who don't save for retirement, but i figured the message would be lost on those who don't understanding making sacrifices and budgeting for magic cards, let alone retirement accounts..
