Theros, Heroes vs. Monsters, and From the Vault: Twenty have been added.
Additionally, to celebrate my actually being able to make it to a prerelease, Magic Collection will be on sale on Saturday and Sunday! Track the cards you open and use it to plan out your sealed deck.
My iPad isn't playing nice with iOS 7 at the moment, so if you've upgraded yours and notice anything strange in the app, please let me know.
How is data backed up on this device? I would hate to devote hours to inputting my collection then for some reason lose that data.
Is the only form of backup if I use the cloud backup on my Ipad?
If so it sounds like the websites that allow collection storage are more useful then since you won't ever lose that data.
All of the data you input is stored in a standard SQLLite datavase inside the app. Each time you sync the iPad with iTunes it backs up this data, and if you have elected to use iCloud for device backups, it is preserved there as well.
In addition to these standard backups, you can choose to make a manual backup of any list on the device, including the cards you have. This gives you a simple text file that you can email to yourself for safekeeping. It is human readable, and can be used to restore your collection onto another iPad.
Just wondering when Modern Masters is forecasted to be added to the database?
I added it on Sunday, which is admittedly later than I usually get to it. But it's there now, under the Reprints section near the bottom because I didn't know where else to put it.
Not at this time. It is something I'm looking into, and others have suggested using TCGPlayer for data, but I'm still trying to incorporate it in a way that works with the rest of the app.
This is a quick bug fix for the new expansion filter and fixes an issue where no cards would be shown if you select a set with an apostrophe in the name (*cough* Dragon's Maze *cough*). I apologize for any inconvenience.
hmm this seems awesome. i'm going to have to grab my wife's ipad and test it out soon. granted, i think i'll have to devote some serious time lol, 30k+ cards will take a bit to do
The initial input of a large collection does take awhile. But, I tried hard to design the app so that it goes as quickly as possible. You might have to fiddle with the sorting and filtering in the app to match your collection, but during my tests I was able to input my collection of about 15k in less time than it took my girlfriend to watch 1 season of That 70s Show, if I remember right.
I found a decent way to filter by expansion set, which was the most requested feature. The search controls were also moved into the filter panel since searching is treated like a filter for most purposes.
Swiping up/down to add/remove cards can now be customized. You can turn it off if you are letting a stranger browse and don't want to accidentally mess up your counts, and you can set it to add to the current list you are working on, which makes building a deck faster.
The current count of the list you are working on is displayed next to the list name and the -/+ buttons so you can more easily see how large your deck is getting.
The card type pie chart for lists now displays the actual card counts (which are useful) instead of the percentages (which weren't).
Hybrid and split cards are now treated as monocolored instead of multicolored. This way a W/U card will be shown when looking at just White cards. After updating the app, you will need to update any card sets you have previously downloaded that include hybrid or split cards to see the change. (Note this doesn't apply to split cards where both halves are multicolored or C/D E wedge hybrids.)
This update fixes a small bug that could make some lists unselectable. If you select a list in the List Manager and the spinner rewinds back to the top, this update is for you. It should be available in iTunes over the next day, depending on your location.
Have you considered allowing input via camera? That may be interesting.
I did some tests, and I didn't think it was fast enough. Just looking up one card seems ok, but multiply that by 15, or 60, or 1,000 and it would take a very long time to enter every card you own. I wanted to make sure new users could get all their cards into the app in the smallest amount of time.
Ghrom's app, iMTG, does have that feature if you want to try it out, though.
11.3 Apps using IAP to purchase physical goods or goods and services used outside of the application will be rejected
11.13 Apps that link to external mechanisms for purchases or subscriptions to be used in the App, such as a “buy” button that goes to a web site to purchase a digital book, will be rejected
but I remembered 11.3 wrong and thought it applied to more than just in-app purchases.
Still, I've had apps rejected for pettier reasons, and I can see potential for a long argument to convince them that even though you can buy cards and then check them off in the app, they aren't "used" by the app in a way that violates 11.13.
I don't have any 'I' anything but I do have a Droid . . . is there an app for my Droid phone for MTG???
Unfortunately, I don't have the means right now to make an Android version. I'm still trying to find a way to make a iPhone-sized version of the app work well, and if that happens it would hopefully be easier to port to Android than the tablet-sized version I have now.
Thanks, that looks pretty good. Has anyone run into trouble with Apple's policy against selling physical goods via app when selling cards or linking to sites that sell cards?
How can you use WOTCs art?
Does this provide any pricing information?
How does email import/export work?
The app doesn't contain any WOTC assets. So no logos, mana symbols or card images. Instead, it works like a highly specialized web browser. So rather than use Safari to browse cards on Gatherer or magiccards.info, you can use this app and which includes ways to track which cards you own or want.
No pricing information is included at this time. It is one of the things I'm looking at adding in a future update, but prices tend to get out of date quickly, and I haven't found an elegant way to make sure they are correct while you are browsing. If anyone has a favorite pricing source with a web API that they want to suggest, I'll look into it more.
When you choose to export a card list, the app creates an email attachment that you can send to anyone you want. When you receive an email attachment, you will have to option to open it with the Collection app which begins the import process. The app exports using it's own list format which contains data on the specific version of the card you own (but is still human-readable). It can also import standard .dec files, though it doesn't do sideboards yet.
Took it out for a spin last night...it's handy and intuitive. However, it doesn't seem to skim out multicolor I noticed last night. I can choose to excluse all but one color easily, but not multi. Either I'm missing something, or this is a bug.
But other than that, I really like it.
The multicolor filter does work a bit differently than most. I set it up to function like color identity in Commander. So if you select White, Blue, and Multicolored, you'll see white, blue, and W/U gold, hybrid, and split cards. I don't like the usual "all selected colors" & "any selected colors" because I wanted to keep the filter panel as simple as possible for new players. But, I am getting questions from seasoned players asking why it doesn't work the way they expect since there is no way to completely exclude monocolored cards and only browse multicolored.
I'm still thinking about alternate ways to set it up, so if you have any ideas I'd love to hear them.
I gotta say, this looks VERY interesting. A recipe for me to lose a couple months, mind, but yeah...
If you're worried it will take you a couple months to input your cards, I tried to make that as fast as possible. You can swipe up/down on each card to add/remove one from your collection then flip pages to the next 9.
I grabbed a TV show on DVD and didn't even make it through one season when I input my own collection (~15,000) in just a few days. Though I guess that assumes your collection is already sorted in some way that matches one of the common ones in the app.
The Magic Collection app is now on sale for $1.99 for the month of December. If you're still on the fence, or know that you'll be getting more cards as presents soon, this is probably the best time to give the app a try.
