I love my Putrid Imps. They've won me a lot more games then they've lost me. Hitting in for an extra 2 damage a turn has meant the difference between victory and defeat plenty of times. I currently run 3 in my deck and 90% of the time I'd rather play out an Imp turn 1 than a looting or study
Yeah, while BW tokens is a really strong deck a lot of people say its "too fair" for Modern. We aren't playing 1 & 2 mana 4/5s. We aren't going infinite on turn 4. We aren't dumping our hand on the battlefield by turn 2.
What we are doing is playing the best discard, best spot removal, and best non-infiinite token makers in the format. We're playing with fair cards but the best of the fair cards.
So far I've only played one match against them and they just didn't hit their combo. If they don't hit their combo then you're playing against an ok Abzan Midrange deck. I've found that Discard + Removal helps. RIP stops Finks recursion which is helpful. It also stops Eternal Witness and Scooze.
While I do own Sundering Growth, I was wary of constantly having to leave open WW for it so I just ran Disenchant instead. The ease of casting I feel outweighs the cost of not having populate.
Kataki I've found is typically a one sided Winter Orb against Affinity and really only wipes them out if you've also got Stony Silence in play. It doesn't really destroy as much of their permanents as I'd like so I'd rather have the ability to outright kill the important ones.
I do not bring in my Disenchants against Twin though. They're for Affinity, Tron, Boggles, and Lantern of Insight as well as any random equipment based brews people keep bringing to the store.
Yeah when I Duressed the Twin player I was paired against I saw they had brought in Ancient Grudge and I was like, well you can keep that dead card. I guess they expected me to have a Torpor Orb?
Ghostly Prison I'm really tempted to include especially because someone at my LGS is running a Genesis Wave deck.
For the Twin Match up I cut my 2 Timelys, 2 Sorins, and my second Vault and brought in my 3 Duress, Murderous Cut, and Hero of Bladehold. Duress to stop the combo and get rid of all their countermagic, cut as more removal, and Hero as a threat they have no way to kill and can close a game out fast. Timely doesn't do much for this match up as the 1/1s are easily blocked by Exarch. I don't care much about lifegain in this match up which is why I make the cuts I do.
For the people using Gideon how frequently do you use each of his abilities?
Do you always just pump out a token or attack with him?
How often do you cash him in as a 4 mana indestructible anthem effect?
I wouldn't cut the Windbrisks entirely. They still provide good card advantage and cast stuff at instant speed or a reduced cost is nice. I'd not feel comfortable going below 2 copies. I might cut my 4th for an Urborg as that actually does seem like a good idea.
I liked both Champion and Timely. I honestly won more games because of Champion than Timely. It was great vs Burn and Twin preventing them from comboing off with Deceiver Exarch.
Affinity is favored as most of their creatures are X/1 or X/2. The match I lost, game 2 I would have won if I was on the play, game 3 I just didn't draw any token makers and flooded out. They had an Aether Grid which was also problematic.
Vault I actually only used in 2 games, 1 vs Twin and 1 vs Burn. Locked out both games.
I might cut the 4th Windbrisk as it is a bit clunky but we have a high land count and it usually clears off 2-3 lands from the top of my deck.
The only reason I was running just 1 Hero of Bladehold was because I spent 4 days trying to find a second copy and no one had one. I finally managed to pick it up after the tournament.
Round 1 vs Affinity 2-0
Round 2 vs CoCo Abzan 2-1
Round 3 vs Affinity 1-2
Round 4 vs UR Twin 2-1
Round 5 vs Burn ID into top 4
Semifinals vs Burn 2-1 (Round 5 opponent)
Finals vs Affinity Prize Split (Round 3 opponent)
The Twin match was fun. Tournament was on Halloween so I was wearing my lab coat and was smiling the entire match. It really put him on tilt.
So if you've ever played Storm or against Storm you've seen them cast an Infernal Tutor and then crack LED in response to empty their hand and make 3 mana. You can do the same thing in Dredge.
An ideal turn 1 play from Dredge is to play a land and a LED, then cast a loot spell or breakthrough and retaining priority crack the LED in response. This gets any dredgers in your graveyard for the draw portion of the loot spell. You typically crack for Red mana so you can flash back Faithless Looting after resolving your initial loot.
Or you can just play LED and crack it immediately to flashback a Faithless Looting in your hand.
One neat play is if you are on the draw and keep your opening 7, you can play Cephalid Coliseum and LED. Crack LED for Blue. Put LED + the 6 cards in your hand into the graveyard and activate Coliseum
So stuff happened while I was building this deck and pretty much the only thing apart from some commons and unccommon I need to finish it off are 2 Fetid Heath. Unfortunately I can no longer put as much money into the deck as I'd like so what is the best alternative to Heath? Here's the list I was building.
The main cards I'm considering are to replace it are Caves of Koilos and Isolated Chapel. Which of these is better? Or should I do a 1:1 split? Or is there a different land I should run?
I am a relatively experienced Magic player looking to get back into Modern. For a while I played Soul Sisters but I got tired of going to time in 1/4 of my matches so I haven't played the deck in about a year.
I recently moved and my new LGS runs Modern far more often than my old one hence why I want to rejoin the ranks of Modern players.
I honestly don't really know what deck I want to play. I have a couple of staples and don't really have a problem buying into a deck unless it has Goyfs.
The local meta seems mostly to be small creature based decks (Elves, Affinity, Infect) with a couple of control lists (Jeskai, Grixis, Delver) and some Tron and Skred so I'm looking for something that will do decent in that meta.
My favorite color to play is Black but I don't restrict myself to just that. I prefer going wide with my decks but don't have a problem with going tall. In Legacy I play Dredge and I'm working on Tezzeret Control if that gives an indication of the type of decks I like. I like decks that reward me for knowing my deck and the other decks in the meta. I prefer proactive strategies over reactive ones and decks that have a lot of redundancy.
So with the rise of Mentor Miracles how have people been adapting because I've been struggling to beat them. Regular Miracles was annoying to play through but if you knew the match up it was about even.
With Mentor they not only have a much faster clock but they can gum up the board so much easier and block much more freely.
This is the list I'm currently running and I'm planning to play the deck in the DC Open next weekend.

Not bad for my first time playing the deck.

One neat play is if you are on the draw and keep your opening 7, you can play Cephalid Coliseum and LED. Crack LED for Blue. Put LED + the 6 cards in your hand into the graveyard and activate Coliseum
At its worst, LED reads: 0: Discard your hand.
The main cards I'm considering are to replace it are Caves of Koilos and Isolated Chapel. Which of these is better? Or should I do a 1:1 split? Or is there a different land I should run?
