Wondering what matchups people bring Sword of Feast and Famine in for? I've seen it in a lot of the UWR lists.

So I'm doing cuts and adds to my cube and got thinking about Phyrexxian Metamorph, previously I had counted it as a blue card, but I've been considering counting it as an artifact since it slots in most decks in my cube regardless of colour. Thoughts?

Yeah, looks like swapping the expensive cards out for cheap stuff really is the best option for me when playing with people I don't know that well. I was thinking about adding to the counting idea by putting a number on each card and the sleeve it's in so I can tell if a card got swapped out and out of who's pool it was, but that's just so much work..

I've been reading articles about theft in mtg and while they have a lot of good info in them, I noticed that none of them touch on ways to keep people from stealing when you're drafting with your cube. I figure if there are people out there who can swipe a card from your binder without you noticing, it's not too far of a stretch to believe people can quick swap cards out from their cube picks without you even noticing, especially if you're in the middle of a game. It's great to assume that everyone I'd ever be playing with is trustworthy enough to not do anything like this, but I feel that it'd be naive of me to believe this.

So my question is am I the only one worried about this? And if not, what are some things people are doing to keep the valuable stuff in their cube safe?

Time will tell, I am saying it wont go below $30 after the initial dip after rotation.

Restoration Angel is played a ton in Modern yet it dropped a lot after rotation.

Resto is not comparable to mutavault. Like I said, time will tell. We will see in a few months, no sense in arguing about it.

For Standard cards that will see play in Modern, the best time to get them is right after rotation. They will no longer be in Standard, but there will still be supply because they were just printed in a Standard set. After a short period, the price will go back right up, often times even higher than what they were in Standard. So the best time to get Mutavault is right after rotation.

Not always. Liliana of the Veil and Geist of Saint Traft both raised in value after they rotated out of standard. If it sees a LOT of play outside of standard, then of course the card is going to raise after it is no longer printed. It's a case by case scenario.

This is not true, I picked up Liliana at 33 during rotation and geist at 21. I remember seeing Liliana it 45 and geist at 30 before everyone started selling out, Geist ended up dropping even lower after that, but I think that was due to TNN taking it's place in legacy and a drop in popularity in modern.

Yeah, I picked a playset up for $15 a piece shortly after the reprint. I'll add that it was at that price with people knowing it would see play in standard as well as the play it already sees in Modern and Legacy.

It'll definitely drop, people said geist, karn and mox opal wouldn't drop on rotation and they all did and all saw a good amount of play outside of standard at the time. They may be more now but they all tanked in price during rotation.

I never said they wouldnt, but its a small window from about August - October when the dip happens, then they start climbing again.
That $15 price you got was from the flood of those being held by speculators/stores. They will dry up again.

yes, it could have been from speculators, but here are the numbers I'm looking at. Merfolk is 3% and fae is 2% of top's in modern. Merfolk is 3% in Legacy. With Mutavault at 80% of tops in standard we're looking at a very significant amount of people who have Mutavaults and aren't going to be using them in Legacy or Modern and will no longer need them for standard.

Mutavault is expensive because of standard, nothing else. Once it rotates out it will go back to being $15-20

Completely agree, the card's in 80% of the decks topping standard.

Unintentional exclusion is not elitism. Intentional exclusion certainly is. If you're trying to argue that everyone who simply would like to play Legacy should have the same economic opportunity to do so, then you've gone off the deep end my friend. I would love to own a Rolex, but I can't afford one. Does the simple notion that I would like one mean that the Rolex dealer network should allow me to purchase one for the price of a Timex? Ludicrous argument, right?

I dunno, are Rolexes very different from other wristwatches? Do they function differently on a fundamental level? Do they offer functionality that no other wristwatches can offer? And if you want to own a wristwatch, is a Rolex your only option besides other brands that are much less reliable or useful? I mean, you can still tell time with a pocket watch or a phone or whatever, you don't need a wristwatch. But if we are to compare this properly, then a Rolex at the prices that those things go for would be your only options for owning a wristwatch that works properly, essentially making the wristwatch a luxury product because Rolex has exclusive rights to it and have stopped making some watches years ago which have functionality that no other watches have, etc., etc.

The deeper you delve into this kind of comparison, the more it falls apart. You don't need a wristwatch to tell time, just like you don't need to play Magic. But I bet that if owning a wristwatch at all was considered expensive and luxurious, you would find that silly.

Great attempt to twist his logic but that isn't what he's arguing. I'll divide legacy into its own planet. Your "Rolex functionality" counter argument assumes you are on planet legacy, where you have an inherent right to own a watch in the first place. On planet earth, you don't. On planet earth, you also have no right to Legacy or magic at all. Whether any of you want to admit it, Legacy is pretty close to the Rolex of formats. The level of fun, nostalgia and prestige in the format dominates most of the others, in my obviously humble opinion. Wink Guess what my friends? This is why you were told back in school to do your homework, study hard and stay away from drugs, girls and playing Xbox all night; because money will always talk louder than your personal philosophy about what is "fair" on planet legacy. You may not be able to drop hundreds of dollars on duals but many people obviously are and that sucks for you if you chose to party hardy when you should have been studying. End Story.

I kind of feel like most players that are out of school have the ability to spend that kind of money on duals but choose not to. My only option to play legacy is to drive over an hour for a proxy tournament. It's not very prestigious owning cards that cost $300 dollars that I rarely get to use. There's just too little tournament support for most people to be willing to put that kind of money into legacy. If you're lucky enough to live in a place that has a legacy scene that's great, but most people I know are more willing to spend the money on formats that are generally supported more, even if they prefer legacy.

I think people worrying about the price of reserve list staples crashing with a change to the list are worrying for nothing. Wizards has proved they have ways to reprint without bringing prices down long-term. If wizards chose to change the reserve list and support legacy more I could actually see prices going up just because more people would start getting into the format.

I put gut shot in my side after reading an article on Channel Fireball about merfolk. I've only played the match once since and never drew it so I'm not sure how it is yet. Was also thinking about Spell Snare for that matchup, since the cards I have the most trouble with in affinity are all cmc 2 and it would be playable against other decks too.

Is there reason to worry about Snapcaster mage eventually coming to the chopping block? Lately I've been feeling like it's just getting better and better in modern, really don't want to see it go any time down the road though.

Still have plenty of GY hate on the format. Its not like DRS was the only piece keeping Snapcaster in check. Yes with DRS gone Snappy gets a tad better, but not out of control dominating.

Really hoping that's the case, I'll just keep playing them and try not worry about it too much, haha.

I don't think anyone knows what will be seen in faeries right now...

I think Liliana could fit quite well into the right faeries shell. For example, I play UWR midrange and have been testing against faeries. In games where I am on the play and faeries plays a turn 2 bitterblossom (in the rare chance I don't have mana leak or remand), but I play a turn three Geist, faeries loses around 80% of the time. I get to swing on turn 4, and the only way they can try to prevent the 6 damage profitably is by flashing in a spellstutter and double blocking, but at that point I can let it resolve then remove the token or spellstutter.

Lets say they played around removal and perhaps played a scion and didn't block. I still remove the scion on my turn 4 with counter mana or removal mana up. The next turn I'm looking at 2 tokens as I most likely countered whatever else they attempted to play. If I have one more removal spell and they double block here, their board is wiped at they have, at most, 8 life remaining and the game is over right there...

Now, if instead of scion or spellstutter or even V-Clique they had played Liliana on turn 3 and minus 2'd her, I'm essentially down for the count with no way out of it...

Liliana is a 3 mana walker that can lock down a game...something that is right in faeries wheelhouse. I think it is very possible they could play her, but we'll have to see how the deck unfolds. I know I gave a very specific situation, but since UWR won the last grand prix and only got stronger with the DRS ban, I think this is something to consider...

Faeries also has no card-draw, wants its counterspells to remain in its hand instead of in the graveyard, and doesn't want to tap out on turn 3 to play an edict. If anything, they'd play Devour Flesh. Liliana's +1 isn't good in Faeries. Without a good way to use it, she is just overcosted sorcery-speed removal.

I agree there's a chance that it won't see play in fae, but I do think there's valid arguments both ways. I read Caleb Durward's most recent article the other day and he had it as a two-of but I'm assuming that list is untested, and I think he mentioned he wasn't sure about it. Wondering if anyone has seen people testing it out.
