I really like the Idea of UB Control, also Mill, I often play with friends, but they are kind of competitive, so I would like a good control and if possible milling deck. Is that possible in Legacy?

Maybe Painter in some form, some versions of it seem like combo mill/control. Not sure if it's quite what you're looking for though. Other than that I can't think of anything that mills that's very competitive, if you like milling yourself just as much as your opponents there's Cephalid Breakfast and Oops all speells :P.

I like the Jace art but I just don't think it fits right on the card, they just cut too much of it out.

Skyshroud Elite and Skyshroud War Beast would boost aggro and encourage monocolor.

Phyrexian Dreadnought would allow for a Modern Stiflenought deck (I tried with the Hunted creatures and Eater of Days, but they were either too expensive or weren't worth the effort).

Memory Lapse and Counterspell would both be good editions to the format.

I would love getting Unexpectadly Absent.

From the Ashes and Back to Basics would also help punish greedy manabases.

I agree with all of those, unfortunately Dreadnought is on the reserved list though.

    Hey all -

My friend is looking to get into legacy with me for an upcoming tournament about three weeks out. I bought my legacy deck recently as singles, so we have very few extra legacy singles for him to use.

He wants to play UWR Delver eventually, but that would be around 1.7-1.8k for us to get.

Are there any decks that share some similar staples that he can get for this tournament and slowly work his way to Delver? Ideally, around 550 USD is best (ebay prices), but potentially we could spend a little more. We know merfolk shares forces and wastelands, but we were told that it isn't a very strong deck right now. Are there any other decks that will help lead to UWR delver or is this the best it's going to get?

He might be able to make a budget version of UR Delver. Although it's not ideal, you can get away with only one Volcanic Island with that deck, I played the deck with 7 fetches and 1 volcanic for a while and it wasn't that bad, unfortunately with fetches at such a high price it'd make it tight for that budget.

Can't really blame people for wanting cards/sets/blocks that could possibly add more diversity. That's what this thread's all about! Smile

I kinda agree, being ok with Entomb over Strix is a bit nanners.

The only concern with Entomb really is if it makes instant reanimator too consistent. I'd say it's safe, and that making a combo deck like that better would be good for the format, but I'm sure there's plenty of people that disagree.

I don't think that looking at Strix by itself being fair is a good evaluation of wether or not it's safe for the format. You have to look at what else can go with it, Caleb Durward recently stated that he believes Deathrite Shaman, Tarmogoyf and Baleful Strix are the 3 best creatures in the game (excluding Griselbrand). I believe that if it were modern legal we would see a very scary BUG deck come out of it, which would in turn destroy other decks in the format. If people find Jund to be a problem now they'd find BUG with strix even worse. At the moment I don't think it's good for modern, maybe in the future if the power level of the format goes up, but not now.

It's probably been mentioned before, but it's worth mentioning again. Veteran Explorer would be sweet in modern.

    Hi

I have been playing magic for about 12 years now with a break during happening after Champions of Kamigawa was released I started playing again a couple months ago. I have a standard deck that I enjoy and in Modern I have messed around a bit but have settled on playing Merfolk. Legacy caught my eye because it seems much more open as a format and honestly seems more fun than modern (due to the format being defined already) and standard (due to rotation). I would really like to take a dip in the format and am torn between making my modern Merfolk into a viable legacy version or trying to make MUD because it looks like a blast to play or building goblins because my favorite deck I have played in magic was onslaught block goblins. So which deck should I play/build?

I'd say the best way to figure that out is to proxy them up and get a feel for them before making a decision for sure, they're all good decks to put money into in my opinion. If I remember Onslaught block goblins right legacy goblins is even more fun to play, and I say that with only ever playing a budget version of the deck.

What would be your recommendation? Right now I am using extra basics and shocks for the duals until I get replacements. I really appreciate the help and look forward to being a member of the legacy community.

I'm not an expert with prices but I've had a little bit of luck in the past with predictions. I'm making the guess that we'll see fetches reprinted sometime after RTR rotates from standard, you can never be sure but, personally I'm waiting on the rest that I want, mind you I have all the ones I need for UWR, I just want black ones now. Duals seem to be fairly stable at the moment, but they'll spike as soon as we see a reprint of fetches, they're always a safe buy and always easy to trade off too, I'd pick what I need of them up probably before the next block comes out. All of the modern staples are probably going to go up for the PTQ season in the summer, people will likely start buying them a little before the season starts so I'd say they're the most likely to go up the most the soonest. I'm not really sure about the rest, wasteland, force and karakas seem to have been really stable, but I guess you never know what's going to happen for sure.

Edit: It could be best to just focus on the cheapest of the decks you want to make first as well. I also noticed that the Legacy staples I was keeping an eye on dropped a little during the modern PTQ season and then went right back up when it was over.

Bat hickey : I've been trying your build with the three drop cut online and I'm enjoying cosi (got him to a 9/9 vs pod!) however I'm still finding remand underwhelming. I might try and swap out for mana leak. I'm still unsure if this build is any better than the other builds I have on the go.

My first build I ran on modo had 4 remand, they won me games sometimes but more often I was a turn too late being able to play them and get good use out of them. I tried them as a 4, 3, and 2 of in my deck before eventually cutting them. Right now my only 2 counters in the md are 2x spell pierce, I've been considering trying out some number of mana leak too though, my experience with remand has kind of deterred me from it until recently.

No, if you would go back and read what i said you would see i said that a precon with goyf in it would make the precon the price of goyf.

You were also agreeing with the statement that an LGS would just charge what the contents were worth in that comment. Which is never the case in my experience. The last FTV I bought I got for a little over half of what the value of the contents were. If it was a higher print run than FTV series' it would have a much better effect on the prices. And really, the worst thing that would happen is what happens when a FTV series or anything like that is printed.

People are willing to buy goyfs now, people would be even more willing to buy them if the price dropped even slightly. Further, in a precon, stores arent just going to cut prices to move product if the product is going to move anyway, why buy only goyfs when you can buy a precon with goyf in it for the same price? The inclusion of goyf in a precon is going to make the precon the price of goyf and make it hard to find.

Yes but basically what is being stated is the precons would be sold by stores for the price of the contents, goyf's price plus whatever else is in there, this is wrong. These types of products always sell for a fair amount less than the value of the contents at any store I've ever bought them from, the stores are still making a lot of money off of charging less than the value of the cards. If there's a precon that had a card worth 120 plus some other cards together worth 20, I'm not going to pay 140 to get the 120 card that I already opted out of buying at at 120. Now if it's 120 for the precon and I get 20 worth of traders after getting the card I want, that's a slightly better deal, I can sell those cards making my cost of the $120 card $100.

I think it would drop the price somewhat, Jace dipped from a very limited sealed release in comparison to an event deck. Think of it this way, Goyf is available to buy at it's current price, if people want to pay that price for it they can. If they're not willing to pay that price for it, they're not going to be willing to pay that price for it in a precon. Stores would cut the price to move the product, unless they want to buy the product from wizards to just sit on it, which doesn't make a lot of sense.

They should really just start making modern tournament decks, have a couple with really expensive staples that the store gets to charge ridiculous amounts of money for, and have some that won't sell out right away but have a little value in them.
