I could order cards online but it'd be risking not getting them in time. I live in Nova Scotia Canada, things usually take twice as long to get here. After looking at both the lists I made for the two different decks, I have to say UR control looks a lot more fun, I'll only need a few commons and uncommons to make a playable version too.
Hoping I'll be able to pick up some pyromancer ascensions before the tournament though, I hadn't really considered it for a deck. It looks like it would be really fun to use. Thanks for the help.
I'm going to a pretty casual extended tournament next week and I'm trying to build around the few staples I have for extended right now. I only buy packs when I draft, which isn't that often so I don't have much for the format. The staples I own for the format are,
4x scalding tarn
4x grim lavamancer
4x green sun's zenith
1x knight of the reliquary
1x basilisk collar
1x noble hierarch
1x birds of paradise
And that's basically it... . The only place I can buy singles from and get them in time sells all their junk rares for $4 dollars a piece, so the only rares I'd really want to buy would have to be between 4-6 I'm thinking. The deck will mostly be commons and uncommons, I'm really not sure what would be the best route to go on a tight budget. I made up a GW aggro list that wouldn't cost too much to build, or I could go for a more control style UR with trinket mage, lavamancer, brittle effigy and basilisk collar.
What are some solid budget cards for either of these decks?
Honestly the deck is very terrible. You really shouldn't take EVERY event into account. If you are dying to death to beat Zoo there is a deck that does that for days...it is called Idiot Life. The drawback to it back in the day was Zoo was its ONLY good match-up. The bans they put in place for this format were to try and keep it versatile.
The reason it is insane with aggro decks is aggro is the number one choice by about 95% of Magic players when new cards come out or new bans or rules are set in place.
There are enough cards with aspects to the control archetype already in the format...honestly the only overpowered card banned was Big Jace. Ponder and Preordain were nice.
Gifts is a very ridiculous card, so is mystical teachings...you don't always need to ddraw cards when you can just grab the answer
I'm not dying to beat it, it just seems like the deck to compare every other deck to in the format right now. Besides, I hear terrible decks are beating it in tournaments anyway. I'm just messing with you
I think that deck did look like it needed adjustments, but it is some proof that there are still good options for control. A pro tested version could be pretty decent.
This just in: Snapcaster Mage is a card. Between it and Eternal Witness the deck can recur the **** out of PtE and ***. Academy Ruins + EE in a 3 color deck also hurts Zoo pretty badly once it gets going.
Yeah, I'm pretty impressed with it so far. Love the art too.
TBQH if it showed up in one daily event it really doesn't mean anything. You have a really high chance to go up against random jank for 3 rounds. The meta is going to be the same as it was except 12post is gone.
That's true, there's no telling what the deck was really up against. The decks posted to the same tournament were 12-post, affinity (missing ravager), counter cat, 2 storm and fish. It could have had some easy matchups right to the finals. But regardless I think the deck looked half decent, maybe a little too slow for the current meta but it could be easily be modified.
I think we'll see control pop up at the next big tournament, that's a fairly easy meta to build against for control, 4/5 decks rely on creatures to win. If you can board similar cards to beat 80% of the meta then I'd say you've got a pretty good chance to do well.
We should see some show up in some MTGO daily results. I am still on the fence about trying to run teachings, the only deck I have up.
I saw it as a 2 of in a cruel control deck that went 3-1. Looked like a decent deck, it was before the bans were in effect too so it had a lot of slots dedicated to 12 - post. Might be even better now that there's no 12 - post to worry about.
I always thought control was just the deck that played for late game stalling aggro and combo, then winning off card advantage/card quality. Isn't caw-blade just that? I dunno, correct me if I'm wrong.
The thing is, zoo isn't unbeatable in this format. It's so common and places so well because it's a really good deck that employs a very simple strategy. And I don't think that control decks necessarily need any of the cards on the ban list to beat it, so why give them cards that could possibly make them too good to beat? People are complaining about one or two cards missing from old extended decks making them unplayable when there are whole blocks of cards that have never even been tried in some of these decks.
Going a bit further, even in Legacy Jace-SFM decks were overated. I've yet to lose a set of 3 against it, even when Mental Misstep was around.
While I can see that they're potentially format warping in that decks will want to play blue for Jace, and white for SFM, they're hardly overpowered.
Don't get me wrong, I love SFM. But if it were legal wouldn't the format mostly just be some sort of stoneforge control and zoo? I don't think it would be a healthy format. On the other hand, zoo against the world isn't either.
[edit] I do agree that Stoneforge isn't necissarily too good for the format, I just think it would make the format less fun. (even though I'd be running it)
Jace is a really good card but honestly, for the most part when I have played against it, it's just ended up being a brainstorm or unsummon for 4 at sorcery speed. I don't think it's too powerful for the format, and I don't really think it's going to make or break control if it is or isn't in the format.
To be honest I'd like to see what the meta would look like without goyf or KotR.
I think WoTC will reprint goyf in standard. I think they phased out terramorphic expanse and other fetches so that goyf would not be totally broken. Confidant is not broken but very good in the right deck, he is actually used very sparingly in modern right now. I could maybe see him getting a reprint in M13 (though I thing the above the curve old card they will be reprinting will be counterspell). The Ravinca Shocks... maybe in next years FtV? I dont see them reprinting them isn a standard legal set anytime soon.
I dunno, there are a lot of cards in innistrad that fill graveyards up.
Honestly, I see them reprinting allied fetches before the rav duals. I could be wrong, but it seems to make more sense to me. There's already a decent demand for them and making them modern legal would only put the demand up, giving wizards a good selling product.
1x Inferno Titan
1x Shivan Dragon
1x Siege-Gang commander
4x grim Lavamancer
4x Trinket Mage
3x Aether adept
4x See Beyond
3x Think Twice
4x Mana Leak
2x Earthquake
4x Incinerate
4x Lightning Bolt
1x Darksteel Axe
1x Brittle Effigy
1x Basilisk Collar
Lands 22
4x Scalding tarn
9x Island
9x Mountain

1st gifts control
2nd gifts control
3/4 molten zoo
3/4 mono red affinity
5/8 boom/bust zoo
5/8 countercat
5/8 exarch twin
5/8 solar flare
The only thing i don't like about it is seeing solar flare, I hated playing against it when it was in standard.
