Is this really better than swordtooth and no one runsthat.

Yes. Excuse the mild hyperbole, but this card isn’t in the same galaxy as sword tooth.

Chromatic lantern level fixing, on a great blocker, that also lets you explore every turn is nuts.

all 3 of those attributes are good and valuable. Combine them and you have excellence. For the majority of games, sword tooth only has one of those abilities. By the time you “ascend” in cube, a 5/5 isn’t even close to as relevant as a 2/4 is in the early game.

Vedalken shackles is another good interaction that hasn’t been mentioned.

I’d be surprised if this wasn’t the best card in the set spoiled so far.

The upside of this card is definitely there and in the perfect shell it should be an absolute powerhouse.

My concern is that the majority of my GU don’t fill the graveyard well at all.

The 1GU part of the card is a solid floor, but the meat of the power in the card is in its escape cost.
therefore you want it in a deck that can cast UUGG. It’s not good as a splash.

It seems very good in a GU deck with fetchlands and cantrips, but maybe non maindeckable in a permanent based green ramp deck.

I’ll test because of its upside, but not confident it’ll stick. Unsure how narrow it’ll be in cube. Prob nuts in constructed.

I think the body is too weak in too many matchups, considering that a lot of games don't come down to planeswalkers.
Even when the games do come down to walkers, the tax is good, but it isn't devastating.

    Pass for me.

I think this needs too much going for you on your board state for this to be good and red 3 is so competitive.

Would be great in an aristocrats shell IF it didn't have RR in it's mana cost. Aristocrats mostly splash red, they don't have an equal 2 color mana base.

It's really a mono R card, but mono R wants to maximize immediate damage output more than anything, and anax isn't as good as it's competition at doing that.

Decent for sure, but not interested in it.

    Think this card is incredible.
Crucible.dec support, big blocker, splashable, chromatic lantern fixing and helps ramp if you have the resources.

Can't slam it in every green deck, so there's deck building/draft decisions that come along with it.

Be surprised if this card doesn't stick for a while.

Auto Testing. I think this card is very good and is competitive with the rabble master variants.

depends partially on your cube make up. This guy much better vs creature decks, but rabblemaster variants much better vs non interactive combo.

Essentially a fireball, without the upside (splitting targets or flash back like devil's play),
that is less potent when targeting the player (can be blocked to soak up damage)
but is much better as a removal spell (doubles the X damage).

Given all those trade off's I think the card may? be the best fireball type variant for cube?

Not sure if good enough still, but it's interesting nonetheless.

I recommend meren of clan nel toth, for birthing pod support.

when first reading polukranos I misread the remove counters clause, as being like oathsworn knight. It’s significantly worse than I first thought... though the escape mide is very powerful and it’s good at picking off cheap utility creatures and beating down on empty board states.

I wonder if it’s worth including heliod in your cube if you ONLY have say walking ballista + triskellion?

walking ballista is such a powerful interaction (turn 4 kill w/o acceleration) id be tempted to say yes.

the downside of that is , you probably can’t justify draftinn heliod until you already have a combo piece. Whereas with more support you can maybe justify building around heliod itself.

it’s not a turn 4 kill without acceleration because ballista dies when heliods trigger is on the stack unless ballista has a second counter. I guess it’s a turn 4 kill if you play ballista in turn 2 and can attack with it unblocked, but that seems unlikely.

Unless I’m missing some interaction, which is entirely possible.

"I guess it’s a turn 4 kill if you play ballista in turn 2 and can attack with it unblocked, but that seems unlikely."

I'm going to pretend this is what I meant instead of the reality that I didn't think through the interaction well enough when I said turn 4 kill.

Card seems pushed. Not great vs white removal, but creature decks should find this annoying AF.
    Also random recruiter/counter synergies.

Think he's competitive with the golgari cards ranked after the premium removal spells. How competitive? I'll have to test to find out Smile

Unlike say hellrider, I like how it’s playable in a more midrange shell as well as Agro. Body is a solid blocker and it doesn’t need any other support to be good.

card is very close for me, but can’t imagine it would stick (due to reds roles and the stacked 4 drop slot).

The pure Agro 4 drops are quite a bit better in Agro.

Maybe I’ll test it out of curiosity.

    I dig this card.
Probably too low impact , but it’s an interesting role player.

doubt I’ll test , but I expect it to be better than it looks. If only it were 3 life or 3 cards etc.

Infinite damage kill with Walking ballista and Triskellion.
Enlightened tutor grabs both parts of the combo OMG

Gain infinite life with spike feeder....

    semi-playable in mono white.

Think this is basically an auto-include for me.
