If you were going to test barrage of expendables, why not just scorched rusalka instead? It seems better even though it's a creature.

Most likely because it can't hit creatures. Machine-gunning Myr at your opponents threats seems like the best use of Barrage of Expendables

I don't play Birthing Pod, but it really looks like LSV should have gained life off Deathrite Shaman with Shenhar's Cryptic Command on the stack and chorded for Kitchen Finks. His clock looked good enough as is without the draining

    Quote from Zekimar
Did LSV just miss Voice triggers from the cryptic or am i missing something?

Nah, he got them. He even used them to convoke Chord of Calling

Absolutely, I think I'll 2 running two Barrage of Expendables main deck, and another in the side.

It's also nice to respond to Mogg War Marshall's echo trigger.

The Goblin Arsonist might still be a subpar 1-drop though?

Maybe. Spikeshot Elder has been pretty awesome for me. Akki Avalanchers and Goblin Cohort are both a bit disappointing and Mogg Fanatic has been good for me but my local meta shifted and I don't run him anymore.

Goblin Arsonist still trades with x/2s and can be used as a pseudo-Ember Hauler with Barrage of Expendables out.

Not the most exciting thing, but I think splitting between him and Spikeshot Elder is where I want to be. Past Legion Loyalist, Foundry Street Denizen, and Goblin Guide, our last 1-drop (if we do have one more) is a bit lacking.

    ---

No exciting Modern Goblins yet, but I am really looking forward to playtesting Barrage of Expendables for reach. I know most people aren't running him, but it may be what makes me kick out Goblin Wardriver in favor of something like Dragon Fodder. I also think this makes Goblin Arsonist the top contender for our 1-drop flex spot

If you have aether vial in play, Tideshaper is more useful against kiki-jiki, mirror breaker than threads of disloyalty. It is worthy of being tested.

Marginally. Usually they want to flash in the creature that will be copied and then play the Splinter Twin/Kiki-Jiki on their turn immediately afterwards. Maybe they'd play it differently against Merfolk because the deck isn't known for sorcery speed removal, but if it goes according to their gameplan then they tap him in response or they should already have a Pestermite/Deciever Exarch trigger to untap him on the stack.

Spellskite seems like a better hate-creature because it hits 75% of the combinations. (Only Deciever Exarch + Kiki-Jiki can't have one or more piece be stolen)

Forgive me if I'm being stupid rules-wise, but I think there's an infinite combo with Banisher Priest that I had just posted on reddit.

In some RW EDH deck play Banisher Priest when you have Confusion in the Ranks on the board. Stack the triggers so you trade Banisher Priest for a guy and then use BP's own trigger to exile itself (since an opponent controls it). Do this over and over to steal everything targettable.

Thankfully we can still do dumb things that go against the intended purpose of the card even if they fixed the wording from Fiend Hunter

EDIT: Haha, no. You'd need two more. Well, whoops. Looks like this is no more efficient than anything you could do before

What matchups do you bring in the Goblin Assault's for?

I imagine it'd be decks that make you play a grindier game. UWR has a lot of 1-for-1'ing against you and won't have enchantment removal so a resolved Goblin Assault is fairly easy to ride to victory.

Against something like Jund this is sadly weaker because one of their best options for killing all your guys (Abrupt Decay) also hits this.

As for you jdow, have you considered running 1 copy of Shared Animosity in your deck? I remember for a little while there were Goblin decks showing up in the dailies with 4 copies (which seemed to play more like aggro-combo than aggro) but I've been very happy with one copy. I don't have to worry about screwing myself with multiples, but this card ends games

I think you could also consider Sulfur Elemental in the board. I use it and it blows W/x Lifegain and W/x Tokens out hard when it resolves

I'm a huge Modern player and have been running Mono-Red Goblins for months. This week I want to try my first Standard tourney at my LGS's FNM and I intend to play my favorite deck in a different format. What changes can I make to make this deck more viable and if I should be running Hellrider in my 60 what does he go in place of?

Can we discuss spoiled cards here? If so...

Celestial Flare looks like a good sideboard card. Infect doesn't really have a good answer to this and can't just hexproof their guy like they do for Path to Exile. Looks like it'd do a number on the Bogle-Enchant deck too. It's less exciting elsewhere, but I think the card is a meta choice worth considering

I'd like to just say that Undying Evil isn't super great here if you intend to use it how I think you intend to use it. By the time they choose to take 4 or not it is too late to do anything and using it before they choose to take the damage does almost guarantee you can keep your 4/3 devil, but at the cost of two mana and two cards.

Hi, my name is Spike. I play competitive Magic in the tournament scene and play for only one reason... to win. I don't care about the creative aspects of the game and have become so obsessed with streamlining the power of my cards and decks that I find it impossible to wrap my head around the idea that some other players of this game may play for reasons different from my own. As far as I'm concerned, these "casual" players, as they call themselves, are a hinderance to my enjoyment of the game. Every damn set that comes out, there is some overcosted red enchantment that does nothing remotely useful taking up the slot of what could be a tournament worthy card for MY deck. It's infuriating. These casual players suck at this game... I mean, they are really, really bad at Magic. Because they enjoy playing with inferior cards, they are themselves inferior to me. Their opinions and desires do not matter, yet WotC seems to insist that they do. It's not like these casual players spend money on the game. I mean, I'm the one that plays with cards worth $60... my deck costs as much as a casual player spends on rent fer Christ's sake. Sure, I bought those cards from the secondary market, but I'm sure Wizards sees most of that money. The point I'm trying to make is that if someone doesn't hold the same values as me, in life or in a card game, they are not as important as me and their opinions are not as important as mine and they should not be respected or acknowledged as holding any type of value in the Magic community. I, Spike, and all my contemporaries (also all named Spike, if you would believe that) are all that should matter because everyone else sucks at card evaluation, deck building and Magic in general. Spike RULES!!!!

Yes, that is literally exactly what we are all like. Every single spike and person who doesn't like this card is a hateful person and we do all believe that everybody else deserves no respect is worthless. We also all spend as much money as we can. Turns out that's the trick to the game. Shuffling up and playing is a formality, but we really could just ask one another how much our deck costs and scoop to the other person.

Holy crap this is the biggest strawman I've ever seen.

For one, Wizards does appreciate secondary market sales. They won't see the money themselves, but Magic being profitable enough that stores continue to carry it is good for them. Even if I don't open something from a pack, the cards I buy originally came from one. By buying these I am justifying continued pack opening.

I don't know where you're getting this flippant view that we think other people's opinions are invalid. I don't like RoN because it is narrow and explores design space we already have in a wordier way. I think that BitWC can go into more decks and hits more demographics. This has nothing to do with power level (mana cost is a huge part of that and we don't know what either would be).

BitWC could be played in a lot of ways whereas RoN requires me to play a deck with discard or wheel effects. (BitWC has me play decks that play creatures and can potentially lose life at some point in the game. That's a restriction too, but a lot more lenient of one). I want to play with the YMTC. That's supposed to be the fun part of this whole thing. I'm allowed to dislike a card that I'll never get to play because it was voted in over a card that I think has broader applications

These accusations of people talking down to RoN voters are grossly exaggerated. Your card won, stop playing the victim

    Now we're just arguing semantics.

    Strict /= Absolutely

I don't think we are. I was being very literal to prove a point but it sounds like you agree with me. (eg. Lightning Bolt is strictly better than Shock because given the choice to run Lightning Bolt in a deck it would never be overshadowed by Shock even if super niche scenarios make it so Shock[/CARD] would be the better card in hand)

Geist of st. Tract is strictly better than a vanilla 3 drop.

Everything is strictly better than vizzidrix.

    It's your turn.

I'm at two life and control a tapped Suture Priest. You are at one life. In that situation would you rather control Geist of Saint Traft or a vanilla 2/2?

I don't know what your definition of strictly better is, but yours didn't have a satisfying response yet so I figured it was the best example left. This is why I think the "better in every situation" thing is stupid. It almost never happens where one card is actually strictly better under this definition to the point that it's meaningless. The deck construction definition is much better
